Preparing Your Mind For Your Fitness Journey

Your Why

First things first, let’s address your why.

This means let’s acknowledge why you want to do this.

It is important to always remember why you started throughout your journey.

Maybe you want to change how you look or feel?

Maybe you’re unhappy?

Maybe walking up stairs is almost like a death sentence? (Definitely was for me in the beginning. I lived in an apartment complex on the 4th floor, and there was no elevator)

Whatever the reason is acknowledge it and WRITE IT DOWN!

Seriously, write it down.

Once you’ve done that, next write down what your goals are.

Want to lose 10 pounds? 20?

Want to be healthy?

Want to build muscle or tone up? or shape up your booty?

It is just as important to know exactly what you’re working towards as it is to know why you’re working in the first place.

You don’t want to walk into your journey blindly not knowing what the purpose is.

That is setting yourself up to fail.

NOTE: The reasons you come up with are yours and yours alone.

You don’t have to explain them to anyone.

Something to remember during this journey is that you’re not doing this for anyone else.

This is your journey, so own it!

Think About What’s Been Holding You Back

What’s stopping you?

We often make excuses to make ourselves feel better about not doing things we should or could be doing.

So, what is truly holding you back?

If laziness and lack of motivation are apart of your answer join the club!!

They were definitely on my list in the beginning.

What about time? Kids?

Well, hop on board honey.

These are the most common reasons why people don’t exercise or eat healthy.

Let’s call it like it is, though.

They are all EXCUSES!

I know of plenty of mothers, entrepreneurs, business men/women, and people with low income who made it work.

Because they made it a top priority like their job, kids etc.

They decided that being healthy was just as important.

Now, if your reasons for not starting are more complex than that then it is completely understandable.

Maybe you have a medical condition that limits your ability..

There’s probably not much you can do about that, right?

BUT either way you have to start thinking about ways that you can make changes.

What do you have the power to change?

Everyone has the power to change their diet.

So start there if you need to.

Or talk to your doctor and come up with something together.

There is likely a solution.

You just have to find it, and be willing to adjust when you do.

Good old time

Time Clock GIF - Time Clock TimeGoesBy GIFs

Only 24 hours in a day.

8-14 of those hours are being spent at work for a lot people.

Then you get home and you have to take care of your kids, or cook dinner, or you hop on social media(me AF).

So, at this point it seems as though there is no more time left, right?

Learning how to manage your time is beneficial for more reasons, including fitness.

For most of us we spend at least 30 minutes a day doing something that isn’t necessarily important, but it’s pleasing.

I know I did.

I always said I didn’t have enough time, but I got off work at 5pm, got home and scrolled down social apps for the rest of the night.

I had time. And I realized that after a while.

If you can relate to that then you, my friend, have time too.

Even if you have children, or someone to take care of, or other responsibilities it is likely that you still have at least 30 minutes to spare a few times a week.

Use it!

Exercise doesn’t have to last for hours and hours for you to lose weight.

It also doesn’t have to be extremely hard.

Honestly, nutrition is more important anyway.

So if you get your diet under control, 30 minutes a few times a week will be great for you.

The best way to change your mentality about time is by making a schedule. Once you can visualize what your days consist of you will be able to better see when you have free time, and on what days.

These are the areas where you can pencil in a quick workout.

Don’t allow these thoughts about not having time to stop you from achieving your goals. You have the time.

you have to stop telling yourself you don’t, and start figuring out when you do.

If you want something bad enough, you’ll find a way to work it out.

Quick Fix -vs- Lifestyle Change

Personally, in the beginning I just wanted a quick fix.

I wanted a flat belly and that was it.

I tried everything in the book and NOTHING worked for me.

I wasted a ton of money on waist trainers, products and programs, but never stuck with them for more than a week, because I was lazy and unmotivated.

I didn’t want to adjust my diet either.

I wanted to lose my belly fat, but I didn’t want to have to do what was necessary to do that.

That was my problem.

I am not judging if you want a quick fix.

I still consider liposuction every now and then.

But you are here because you are wanting to start a fitness journey.

If a quick fix is what you are after then your fitness journey is not going to last long or be very successful.

In fitness there is no short cut.

You have to put in the work, and be patient.

Coming in expecting things to be done quickly is going to kill your motivation once you see that it ain’t happening like that.

If you want to get fit you have to stop wanting a quick fix and actively decide to make a lifestyle change.

Especially if you want long term results.

That click must happen in your mind or you’ll never commit long enough to actually accomplish your goals.

Think about this for a second.

If you decide you’re going to workout for a month and you lose 10 pounds, thats awesome.

But, once that month is over if you go back to your same old habits then you’re more than likely going to gain that weight back even quicker.

Usually people who do this end up gaining back MORE than they lost.

That makes that month kinda pointless, right?

You did all that just to be bigger and not see any long lasting results for your efforts.

On top of that why would you want to just look good on the outside and be a mess on the inside?

You don’t want to just look and feel good about yourself for one summer do you?

You should want to look & feel good AND be healthy for as long as possible.

Now ima say it one more time so it sticks… A lifestyle change is the way to go and the mindset you HAVE to acquire to be successful in your fitness journey longterm.

Try to enjoy the process instead of rushing things and expecting results tomorrow

even though it took you months or years to gain the weight in the first place.

Start shifting your mind towards becoming better.

When I decided that I didn’t only want a flat belly, and that I wanted to change my life, and look good at the same time

the motivation and consistency came more easily because I knew that I wasn’t on a deadline.

I wasn’t in competition with anyone.

You aren’t either.

Some Things To Be Aware Of

Unfortunately, there are many common misconceptions about weight loss, and I’m here to set the record straight speaking from my own personal experience.

As a beginner you will think a lot of things are true, that aren’t simply because there are a lot of uneducated people who seem trustworthy spreading incorrect information in this industry.

Here are 2 big examples:

1.Weight Loss Products Burn fat

TONS of people will be promoting many different products and claim that these products get rid of fat within a short amount of time, and you may believe it.

Pills, drinks, waist trainers, you name it.

I’VE believed it myself.

Don’t get sucked into the hype.

Have you ever taken a moment to think that if those products worked sooo well, why is the person that’s promoting it still fat or unhealthy?

Or maybe it’s someone who has a “perfect” body, but we all can tell they had surgery.

And I’m not throwing shade, intentionally.

That is their life, their body, their decision.

I’m just being real here.

Companies get rich off of selling us quick fixes that typically do not really work.

Then they tell us you have to maintain a healthy diet and exercise to see results.

Well what’s the common denominator there?

A healthy diet and exercise.

Teas, excess sweating, waist trainers, apple cidar vinegar etc.. will not burn fat!

Repeat after me, THESE THINGS WILL NOT BURN FAT(belly fat, thigh fat, butt fat, none of it)

The only thing that burns fat is a calorie deficit.

Save your money, and just do the work!

And always be mindful of anything you purchase and the things you believe without educating yourself first.

Don’t get scammed by someone for being ignorant.

Do your research, and continue to learn as much as you can throughout this process.

****You should always be taking in more knowledge btw.****

2. Ab Workouts Get Rid of Belly Fat

This is one of the biggest lies out there, so don’t get caught in the trap.

As I said before, you need to have a calorie deficit to burn any kind of fat.

Meaning you need to be burning more calories than you are taking in.

You can’t do a specific exercise like crunches or sit ups and think that it’s going to get rid of the belly fat.

Reasons being because crunches work your muscles, and they don’t burn enough calories to actually make a difference

And also because you can’t spot reduce.

That means you can’t pick one spot on your body and then start working your muscles in that area to burn the fat away.

your body naturally burns fat all over. You don’t get to decide where, unfortunately.

Now you can go ahead and try these things if you want.

I have, and I’m just trying to save you the time, money and trouble.

One of my favorite quotes says , “Whether you say you can or you can’t, you’re right”.

What you tell yourself about yourself ultimately is going to be true.

Speak positivity into your life and into your journey.

Tell yourself that you can do this.

Tell yourself that you will find time.

Tell yourself that you want to make a lifestyle change and that you are capable.

Tell yourself that you are human and you are allowed to make mistakes sometimes.

Tell yourself that you are going to reach your goals no matter what or how long it takes.

Then, go do it boss.
